Extended FAQ
Finality Providers (FPs) add an extra layer of security to the Proof-of-Stake networks Babylon secures. They take part in an additional consensus step, a finality round on top of CometBFT, casting finality votes on blocks.
FPs can also receive Bitcoin delegated by stakers who want to participate without running their own node. Delegators contribute to network security and earn a share of the staking rewards, while the FP earns a commission.
Becoming a Finality Provider offers several benefits:
- Earn rewards: Receive token rewards for participating in finality voting and from the staking rewards of the BTC delegated to you.
- Secure the network: Play an active role in securing Proof-of-Stake networks with Bitcoin-backed finality.
- Support decentralization: Contribute to a more decentralized, resilient network.
While being a Finality Provider is rewarding, it's important to be aware of the risks:
- Slashing: The delegated BTC is slashable under Babylon’s staking protocol for qualifying safety violations.
- Technical demands: Running an FP node requires technical expertise to set up and operate.
No. Only voting power is delegated. The Bitcoin stays locked in the user's self-custodial contract and is never transferred to the FP.
There is no minimum Bitcoin requirement to become a Finality Provider in the Phase-1 mainnet. Your voting power comes from the BTC delegated to you.
To get started, follow the comprehensive guide and resources you need to set up and run your own FP node.
