Integration

Dec 2, 2024

We’re excited to announce that LayerEdge is building on Babylon to unlock zero-knowledge (ZK)-powered growth on Bitcoin.

LayerEdge, a platform that provides fast and cost-efficient ZK-proof verification, is integrating with Babylon to allow developers building ZK applications on Bitcoin.

Zero-knowledge proofs allow one party to prove a fact to another party so they can verify it without the second party knowing the fact itself and are most commonly used to introduce privacy and scalability to blockchains.

LayerEdge provides a service for the ZK ecosystem by significantly reducing the cost of verifying proofs. By aggregating multiple proofs into one, LayerEdge lowers verification costs by up to 99% while maintaining high throughput and robust security. This makes ZK technology more accessible and practical for a wide range of use cases.

This integration not only expands the capabilities of LayerEdge but also strengthens Babylon's position as a leading platform for Bitcoin security and staking.

Babylon complements LayerEdge perfectly by providing the bedrock of security for these ZK applications. By leveraging Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work system, Babylon ensures that any protocol using LayerEdge is backed by the unparalleled security of the Bitcoin network.

Benefits of the integration

This integration with LayerEdge offers several benefits for the Babylon ecosystem:

  • Better security for stakers: By enabling ZK-protocols to settle on Bitcoin, Babylon users gain access to the more security of the Bitcoin network when exploring different Bitcoin Secured Networks (BSNs). This strengthens the security of staked Bitcoin and mitigates risks associated with alternative bridging solutions.

  • Increased rewards: The integration allows Babylon users to explore a wider range of BSNs within the network, potentially unlocking access to higher staking rewards and more diverse opportunities for their staked Bitcoin.

  • Ecosystem growth: Babylon and LayerEdge help foster a modular ecosystem by enabling scalability for ZK protocols and dApps on Bitcoin.

Use cases

With LayerEdge and Babylon, developers can unlock the potential of ZK technology across various domains:

  • On-chain gaming: Enable instant and verifiable game outcomes.

  • ZK oracles: Provide trusted data verification at low costs.

  • Fast bridging: Secure seamless cross-chain transfers.

  • Fast finality for rollups and app chains: Achieve immediate finality for scaling applications.

  • Cheaper verification for identity protocols: Build secure and efficient identity solutions.

More about LayerEdge

LayerEdge is building the first proof aggregation layer on Bitcoin, designed to integrate native verifiers and enable the entire ZK ecosystem to leverage Bitcoin’s security. Their vision extends beyond Bitcoin’s role as a store of value — LayerEdge is transforming Bitcoin into a decentralized verification engine capable of verifying complex computations without executing them directly. This is achieved through their proof aggregation technology, which enables verifiable off-chain execution powered by Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work (PoW) security. By aggregating and verifying proofs efficiently, LayerEdge reduces verification costs by up to 99%, empowering developers to build scalable solutions without compromising on security.

More about Babylon

Babylon is a project that focuses on Bitcoin security sharing protocols with a vision of building a Bitcoin-secured decentralized world. Its latest development is the world’s first trustless and self-custodial Bitcoin staking protocol, which enables Bitcoin holders to stake their BTC on Proof-of-Stake (PoS) systems such as PoS chains, L2s, Data Availability (DA) layers, etc, enabling them to earn staking rewards without the need for third-party custody, bridge solutions, or wrapping services. Babylon combines the high security and wide adoption of Bitcoin with the efficiency and scalability of PoS systems, increasing Bitcoin's utility. Babylon was founded in 2022 by Stanford Professor David Tse and Dr. Fisher Yu. Professor Tse is a member of the U.S. Academy of Engineering and is renowned as the inventor of the legendary proportional-fair scheduling algorithm for wireless communications. Babylon is led by a team of consensus protocol researchers and experienced layer 1 engineers from around the world.
